The short film that i have chosen it Silence is Golden it is a 15 minute film that was directed by Chris Shepherd, it is set in 1970s England and is about a young boy called Billy’s obbsession with his estranged neigbour Dennis who spends most of his time banging on his wall, which really annoys Billys mother and eventually drives her bonkers, the story is mainly centered around Billy and the relationship he shares with Dennis, this is usually Billy tormenting Dennis which is probably the reason for Dennis banging on the walls.

The film is quite funny as there are a few punchy lines in it but in many ways the film is also quite a touching story as, well i dont really want to give away the ending but its touching as in a way Billy eventually realises he misses Dennis when he is gone which then causes him to start behaving in a strange manner.

The film is mostly action footage but also has animation in it, i think the animation is very cleverly used as it manages to show the mind of a young boy and his feelings.

For those of you who would like to watch the film and write a more in depth review of the film the link is http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p004vwxy

So thanks for reading and the film is pretty good so have a watch of it! :)

The first day of filming! :)

December 10th, 2009

Yesterday was our first day of film and i would say our grop had a pretty productive double period of filming despite the fact we had ten minutes to try and get all the shots we needed.

We were filming in the workshop in school which was the perfect place to film a man(Tom) finding his wife(Gillian) bruised, bloody and dead, it was except for the itty, bitty problem that the lighting in the workshop was very bright and the one day we want the weather to be dark, gloomy and depressing, the sun decides to rear it hide! :( But other than that we had a really good first day of filming.

First off i did Gillian’s make up and make her all bruised and bloody it was fun (and Mr Wallis was pretty impressed, which is always a plus) :) we then went up to the workshop where Mr Stuart had a class but allowed us to film in the workshop for ten minutes while he took his class somewhere else (how nice) :) Anyway we then got Gillian to lie on one of the benches (the one with the best lighting that is) and we clamped her wrist in a vice (not tight, just so it looked sore) she then had to pretend to be dead, on this workbench, with her wrist in a vice, with all the noisy machinery on and covered in blood and bruises but we had to try and make it not look like a saw film (what would it be the 7th?) :) Anyway, Tom then had to walk in and find Gillian dead and well, go off his head really :).

I think we got all the shots we needed at that point but Mr Stuart told us we could come back at lunch and film so we did but only for like fifteen minutes, but im pretty confident the footage will be good (as long as i havn’t just jinxed it, oops) :)

I will put pictures of our group working up soonish! :)

Goodbye for now! :)

Continuity editing.

November 24th, 2009

Today Mr Wallis set us the task of creating a complete two minute film on continuity editing in a double period.(2 hours)

So Alice, Tom and i decided to make a maze type film, where when properly edited would look as if tom was trapped in a never ending maze.

I found this activity very helpful with our film production as it gave us a chance to work with the camera and helped us to work together as a group to find out the strengths and weaknesses of our group which will help us when it comes to filming our opening.

As our film hasn’t been fully edited yet, i am unable to post it on my blog but i will ASAP! :)

Anyway, Bye for now!! :)

Poster Analysis!

November 24th, 2009

Avatar poster.

The genre of the Avatar poster is sci-fi/ futuristic, because the colours used in the poster are cold and are similar to that used in the star trek one, and these colours normally remind people of films that have a sci-fi theme. The character shown in the poster looks futuristic as it doesn’t look like a normal person, this also contributes to the genre of sci-fi and the writing looks as if it has been written making it easier to connect to the poster as it gives a realness to it, even though it looks like it is set in futuristic times, but as it is a teaser poster it doesn’t really give much away.

The purpose of the text is to inform the public of the film and to persuade an audience to go and see it as it has “from the director of the titanic” on it this may persuade an audience who enjoys this director’s work to go and see the film and as you can see that the film has a sci-fi edge to it this may get people who enjoy sci-fi films to go and see it.

The denotations of the poster are that the colour blue is used for the writing and the writing is in a sans-serif font. The poster has a females face on it, the female has a green eye, there is shiny dots on her face.

The connotations of the poster the shiny dots are like a mist or a beam like in star trek or something like that, so people would then associate this film with futuristic medias, as the character on it looks like it is female this could suggest an empowerment to women. The writing looks as if it has been hand written so this may give a sense of realism.

The cold colours used in the poster anchor the sci-fi theme as many people associate these kinds of colours with futuristic films. As the character does not look human this also anchors the theme of sci-fi

First meeting!

November 9th, 2009

I was off for the past week so my group had to fill me in on what I had missed and basically my group want to create a sort of neo noir themed opening, by using dim lighting and having one man in a room, with a pool table in it, this man would maybe be smoking and explaining a robbery that had taking place where he and his friend thought they would be ok but something had gone wrong but that is pretty much the just of it but you should probably take a look at Tom’s or Alice’s blog as it is a bit more in depth! :)

During this meeting our groups were asked to look at, well media stuff but mainly concentrating on mise on scene, audience and the constraints.First we spoke about the constraints, such as time as we don’t exactly have a lot of it, budget (or lack of one), technology as we need to be able to find the right cameras, lights etc to create our opening, transport was a big one as we need to figure out how we will get to our location so this obviously relates back to budget, which brings me on to the next problem location we had to find out where we wanted to shoot and what kind of place would have the right look for the film and last but certainly not least we had to find ourselves an able and willing cast, we had spoke about asking seven make teachers to do it, but that is of course if they are up to the challenge! :) We then spoke about mise on scene and how this could affect our whole film we thought about having our cast where suits which would then relate to a sense of power that these men may have, of a trilby hat and trench coat which gives it a film noir convention or motif, we also spoke about guns, drugs and gambling as this could give a sense of danger and action, to quote Tom “Living life on the line” :) , we then thought about having one man look a bit more rugged than the others, making him stand out we thought about doing this by giving the one guy stubble! The setting would maybe be in a smoke filled room, with a snooker table in it.Lastly we spoke about what kind of audience we would like to attract, first we thought we would like to attract people that were into media studies, who would be able to question the film and appreciate the thought that went into it. We then spoke about a “mature” teenage audience, for the same reasons as before. If we wanted to broaden our audience we thought about 20 to 30 year olds, more likely to be male as there would be a mainly male dominated cast, but we aren’t to sure about that one yet. :)
