First meeting!
I was off for the past week so my group had to fill me in on what I had missed and basically my group want to create a sort of neo noir themed opening, by using dim lighting and having one man in a room, with a pool table in it, this man would maybe be smoking and explaining a robbery that had taking place where he and his friend thought they would be ok but something had gone wrong but that is pretty much the just of it but you should probably take a look at Tom’s or Alice’s blog as it is a bit more in depth!
During this meeting our groups were asked to look at, well media stuff but mainly concentrating on mise on scene, audience and the constraints.First we spoke about the constraints, such as time as we don’t exactly have a lot of it, budget (or lack of one), technology as we need to be able to find the right cameras, lights etc to create our opening, transport was a big one as we need to figure out how we will get to our location so this obviously relates back to budget, which brings me on to the next problem location we had to find out where we wanted to shoot and what kind of place would have the right look for the film and last but certainly not least we had to find ourselves an able and willing cast, we had spoke about asking seven make teachers to do it, but that is of course if they are up to the challenge!
We then spoke about mise on scene and how this could affect our whole film we thought about having our cast where suits which would then relate to a sense of power that these men may have, of a trilby hat and trench coat which gives it a film noir convention or motif, we also spoke about guns, drugs and gambling as this could give a sense of danger and action, to quote Tom “Living life on the line”
, we then thought about having one man look a bit more rugged than the others, making him stand out we thought about doing this by giving the one guy stubble! The setting would maybe be in a smoke filled room, with a snooker table in it.Lastly we spoke about what kind of audience we would like to attract, first we thought we would like to attract people that were into media studies, who would be able to question the film and appreciate the thought that went into it. We then spoke about a “mature” teenage audience, for the same reasons as before. If we wanted to broaden our audience we thought about 20 to 30 year olds, more likely to be male as there would be a mainly male dominated cast, but we aren’t to sure about that one yet.

Hi Ellis,
This is a very good summary of the constraints of film-making, and helps you to understand why blockbuster films can cost millions of dollars! I’ll be interested to see how you create the smoke-filled room without any of you smoking! Mr Wallis with a cigar?
Keep up the good work.
Bill
